Renewing your residence permit: deadlines and pitfalls
When to apply?
Submit your renewal application about 3 months before expiry, and no later than 14 days before. Past that, you risk a period without a valid permit — a problem for your employer, lease and travel.
Documents usually required
Cantonal renewal form, valid passport, employment contract or proof of income, health-insurance certificate and, depending on the canton, a new photo. Some cantons send the form automatically before expiry.
What if the permit has already expired?
Contact the cantonal migration office immediately. Late filing is often still possible, but you will have to justify the delay. Do not leave Switzerland without checking first: returning can be complicated without a valid permit.
