From permit B to permit C: conditions and timeline
10 years — or 5 for some
The ordinary rule is 10 years of residence, the last 5 uninterrupted on a permit B. Nationals of certain EU/EFTA states, and spouses of Swiss citizens or C holders, can apply after 5 years.
Integration is closely examined
Language level (often A2 oral / A1 written in the cantonal language), financial independence without social assistance, a clean criminal record and no debt enforcement. A recognised language certificate (fide, telc, etc.) is generally required.
Early permit C
In case of successful integration (higher language level, strong economic participation), some cantons grant permit C after 5 years even outside the privileged cases. Check with your cantonal office.
